Installing MIUI 6 on Xiaomi Mi3 Indian Version

Method 1 : Using Updater App

The method listed here will work for Xiaomi Mi3 variant which is sold in India, all you have to do is follow the steps given below and in no time, you'll be enjoying MIUI 6 magic on your phone. Please note that the MIUI 6 version we will install is Developer version, which means that you might encounter some bugs while using it but don't worry, the developer version gets updated every week and the bugs will get fixed soon.

This process won't delete you data, photos, music etc. but I highly recommend you to backup everything before we begin. To do that go to Settings > Backup & Reset > Local Backup. You can create a Nandroid backup if you have custom recovery installed, but if you don't then stick to the method I suggested. Once you have backed up all your data, you are ready to begin.
Note: The method listed below is so far the safest method and it won't even void warranty. Please proceed at your own risk, I'm not responsible if something turns wrong. However you can get it fixed at your nearest Xiaomi service center, but I'm still not responsible.

Step 1: Download the MIUI 6 Developer ROM from this link. The Developer ROM linked here is for China but it also works for Indian Mi3 phones.

Step 2: In the Internal storage of your Xiaomi Mi3, look for the folder named downloaded_rom and transfer the Developer ROM zip into it. If there is no such folder then create one yourself and move the ROM file into it.

Step 3: Once you've moved the Developer ROM file into your phone. Go to Updater app on your Mi3, press menu button and choose 'Select Update Package' option. Browse to the downloaded ROM file and click on Update.

Follow the Instructions and Update your phone. The process may take several minutes to complete, once done your device will Reboot.

Done! You've successfully Installed MIUI 6 on your Xiaomi Mi3. Go ahead, enjoy your new ROM. Make sure that you update the ROM weekly, this will fix all the bugs if it has any.

Method 2: Using Recovery

Though I will recommend using the first method but if you are experiencing errors or issues with it then you can go for this alternative method. In this method, we will use the stock MIUI Recovery for installation.
Please Note: This method will delete all user data like Settings, messages, logs, app data etc. This method will not wipe your photos, music, videos, installed apps etc. I strongly recommend taking a Backup before you proceed.

Here is the step by step Installation guide.

Step 1: Download the MIUI 6 Developer ROM from this link. The Developer ROM linked here is for China but it also works for Indian Mi3 phones.

Step 2: Rename the Downloaded file to and move it into the root directory of your Xiaomi Mi3 phone.

  • Go to Updater app > Tap Menu key > Reboot to Recovery Mode
  • Turn off your phone, Hold Power button and Volume Up button simultaneously for a few seconds until you enter Recovery mode.

Step 4: Once in Recovery mode, choose English language. From Main Menu, enter Wipe & Reset tab. Choose Wipe User Data and then select Yes.

(Sit back until it's done, When at 98%, it may take several minutes to reach 100%. Do not turn off your device)

Step 5: Once done wiping user data, go to Install to System One and then select Yes. Once the update starts, sit back until it your device finishes the process. It may take several minutes.

Step 6: Once done! Reboot system and Voila! Your are running MIUI 6, update the Google Play Services app to make sure that you don't errors when using Google Apps.
